JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Business Analyst will
serve as a technical & scientific resource to
scientists in Biogen Idec's Technical Development domain,
and will translate scientific requirements into
successful technical solutions & processes. S/he will
be expected to actively gather scientific requirements,
communicate with our scientists to assure their
understanding of existing tools, projects, and future
direction, and meet their ever-changing needs. The
position will focus on IT applications, databases, and
tools used in biopharmaceutical process development,
formulation development, manufacturing scale-up, and
methods development of small-molecule, large-molecule
protein and antibody therapies -
LIMS/workflow/automation, electronic data capture &
recordkeeping/notebook, process monitoring, analysis,
& optimization, and analytical results data from
HPLC, MS, etc.
The key activities for this position include:
. Understanding scientific business needs, defining
creative and useful IT solutions, implementing, and
promoting these to the scientific user community and
management.
. Developing the necessary documentation for IT solutions
projects - i.e. statement of work, project objectives
& metrics, business requirements, use cases,
storyboards, functional specifications, systems &
end-user documentation.
. Assisting in solutions identification, selection,
implementation, and testing, and working with the IT
technical delivery team(s) for translation into solution,
whether new development or commercial applications.
. Serving as project manager for implementations,
including working with external vendors on issues
resolution, communicating/coordinating project needs with
our internal IT technical teams.
. Assisting in application configuration, testing &
QA for new implementations, enhancements, fixes, and
maintenance releases, as well as migration of historical
data.
. Serving as a "super user", trainer, and
technical/functional software support expert during
implementations and for prototypes & pilots; serve as
an in-house expert and promoter for our application
portfolio.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
. Minimum of 3 years' experience as a business analyst,
with command of business analysis techniques & tools,
as well as SDLC & iterative systems development
methodologies, and ideally in the biotech or
pharmaceutical industry
. Minimum of 2 years' project management experience
. Strong knowledge of information systems & workflows
for lab assay data & knowledge management, data query
& analysis, lab automation & LIMS, and inventory.
Familiarity or experience with one of more of the
following (or similar applications):
- Laboratory data management platforms such as NuGenesis
and/or Empower
- Process monitoring & analysis such as PI, PLA
and/or Discoverant
- Electronic lab notebook
- Relational database models (Oracle) & SQL
. Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation for this
particular scientific domain, such as mass spec,
chromatography, bioreactors, and process control systems
. Familiarity with GxP and related regulations governing
successful transition of drug candidates into clinical
trials & manufacturing
. Keenly developed business partnering &
collaboration skills, adept at establishing &
sustaining effective working relationships, both within
& between departments
. Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, with the
ability to interact with business users, technical IT
groups, project managers, senior management, outsourced
service providers, and vendors
. Excellent oral and written communication skills; able
to organize and present ideas in a convincing and
compelling manner.
. Understanding of business strategy development
techniques
. Ability to operate effectively in a matrix environment;
team player yet able to work independently with minimal
direction
